RVMT-BM-1: A New Black Mass Reference Material from myStandards

With RVMT-BM-1, myStandards is expanding its portfolio with a new certified Black Mass Reference Material. The material was developed for laboratories, research groups, instrument manufacturers, and industrial users who want to characterize black mass more reliably, develop analytical methods, or support analytical results with greater confidence.

RVMT-BM-1 is available as a 50 g powder bottle. In addition, the same material is also available as a binder-free pressed pellet under the product name RVMT-BM-1-P.

Why Black Mass Reference Materials Matter

Black mass is a complex and challenging analytical matrix. This is exactly why well-characterized reference materials are important. They can improve comparability between measurements, support method development, and provide a stronger basis for calibration, quality control, and the assessment of analytical results.

For laboratories working with battery recycling materials, reliable reference materials are an important step toward more robust and interpretable analytical data.

Characterized Through an International Interlaboratory Comparison

The characterization of RVMT-BM-1 was based on an extensive international interlaboratory comparison using a range of analytical and sample preparation techniques. Additional studies were performed to assess the homogeneity and stability of the material. Production, characterization, homogeneity and stability assessment, and value assignment were carried out in accordance with the principles and recommendations of ISO 17034 and ISO 33405.

The final certificate provides the certified and informative values together with their expanded uncertainties. A detailed certification report provides further information on material preparation, homogeneity and stability assessment, participating analytical methods, statistical evaluation, and value assignment.

Both documents are available for download on the RVMT-BM-1 product page.

Participating Laboratories and Organizations

The characterization of RVMT-BM-1 was made possible through the contribution of laboratories and analytical specialists from industry, research, testing, and instrument manufacturing.

We would like to sincerely thank all participating organizations for their valuable analytical work, expertise, and support:

Their contributions provided an extensive analytical data basis for the characterization and value assignment of RVMT-BM-1. Further information on the analytical techniques, sample preparation procedures, statistical evaluation, and resulting certified and informative values is available in the RVMT-BM-1 certification report.

Documented Elements

Certified or informative values are provided for the following elements:

Al, C, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, F, Fe, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, O, P, S, Si, and Zr

The distinction between certified and informative values, together with the respective expanded uncertainties, is provided in the product documentation.

Available as Powder – and as a Binder-Free Pellet

One aspect that makes RVMT-BM-1 particularly useful is that the same material is available both as a well-characterized powder and as a binder-free pressed pellet.

This builds on our long-standing experience in manufacturing pressed reference material pellets without adding binder directly to the sample material. As a result, the material can be used in different formats depending on the analytical application.

The powder format is particularly suited to analytical workflows involving techniques such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES, AAS, and XRF. The pellet format is particularly interesting for direct solid analysis techniques such as LIBS and XRF, where a defined solid sample can simplify practical testing, calibration, and method development.

Launch Promotion Until the End of 2026

To make it easier to evaluate both formats in practice, we are currently including one free 32 mm RVMT-BM-1-P pellet worth EUR 79.99 with a 50 g RVMT-BM-1 powder bottle ordered until 31 December 2026. Click here for the promotion.

This gives customers an easy opportunity to test the pellet format alongside the powder in their own analytical workflow.

More Black Mass Materials to Come

RVMT-BM-1 is our first reference material specifically developed for black mass analysis, but it will not be the last. Additional black mass materials are already in development, and customized reference material projects are also possible.
